In the world that we live in today, with its simmering cultural conflicts and entrenched ethnic and racial prejudices, cultural relativism is seen by many as an essential corrective to widespread ethnocentrism. In other words, to avoid and minimize conflict we need tolerance of cultural differences, and the philosophy of cultural relativism promotes acceptance and even appreciation of cultural diversity.
