5.2 Top 10 Technology Issues The following are the top ten technology issues that the UofL Mens Basketball Team faces and that need to be addressed within the context of the organization. All of these issues affect each other and are interconnected.

Dynamic Updates Keeping data updated is extremely important because it affects every aspect of the business. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that describes the growing network of everyday objects that are becoming internet enabled. This produces Big Data which is simply a collection of data that is enormous in size. In the organizations case, the amount of data being gathered and analyzed is quite significant and requires for the system to have dynamic updates included in order to deal with Big Data and the phenomenon of the IoT. Keeping data updated also relates to the organizations ability to adapt to its environment, which is a core criterion for the success of an organizational structure.

Accessibility Accessibility is a major IT issue affecting the UofL Mens Basketball team. There is not currently a system that allows for the proper personnel to access certain data in an efficient way. There is also not a proper system set in place to restrict access at all appropriate levels of the organization. Accessibility will need to be factored into any decision-making to make sure that different levels of access are created for different people. One example of why this is so crucial is the medical aspect of the processes. There is a large amount of private medical data on the teams athletes being stored and accessed by medical personnel on a regular basis. Any future systems will need to adhere to HIPPA laws and regulations to make sure that only the allowed persons are able to access any data such as this.

Usability Usability refers to the system being user friendly. This is especially of a concern for the IT staff as they do not want to deal with anything complicated; If I download and app and it asks me to sign up, Im not doing it, I just cant (Gabe Snider, Director of Analytics). Usability issues can lead to inaccurate reports, inaccessibility, and corruption of data. All of these issues become heightened when there are many different systems set in place, as in the organizations case. Usability of the system will need to be considered when implementing a new system.

Integrity Integrity refers to keeping all of the data intact and uncompromised. This is highly important as compromised data leads to inaccurate results. The more that users are added to a system, and the more systems there are set in place, the higher the changes are of losing data integrity. This can be detrimental to the organization because without integrity of data, the organization cannot function properly. Having one central location for all data can help to keep the integrity of the data.

Security and Privacy Security and Privacy of data refers to two separate yet correlated issues. Data security is related to protecting personal data from exploitation of data or unauthorized third-party access. Data privacy refers to the manner in which personal data is handled, processed, stored, and used and if it has been done so in the appropriate manner with the consent from the holder of the personal data. As previously mentioned, HIPPA laws affect the UofL Mens basketball team as they handle large amounts of private medical information, which means the organization needs to be extremely careful with how any new systems handle the security and privacy of their data.

Scalability Scalability refers to the ability of an organization to adapt in their prospective industry when there is increased demand and growth. It is an important concept to take into consideration within the context of the UofL Mens basketball team because it contributes to the quality, reputation, efficiency, and competitiveness of the organization. It affects factors like response and performance time. The college basketball industry is a highly competitive one, and the goal of the organization is to stay as ahead of the game as possible, which can only be done when their system is scalable.

Technology Integration Technology Integration is the practice of using technological devices, such as computers, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, networks, software applications, and the Internet, in daily practices and management of the organization. One of the issues the organization faces is properly integrating all technologies and systems they use. Although most of the devices produce output that is compatible with Excel, it is likely that the organization will move from using Excel as the primary data housing center and will in that case need to use a system that integrates all aspects of the organization.

Data Loss and Recovery Because there is not a central location to store all of the data, it is more difficult for the organization to ensure a recovery system that prevents data loss. It is extremely important for the organization to have a backup system to deal with data loss and recovery. A faulty backup system can lead to issues such as downtime, where the employees are unable to work and can risk losing clients and slowing down business processes. Simply being unable to recover irreplaceable data can lead to financial losses and a poor reputation of the business. In IT Architecture, data is the most expensive and useful asset because you never stop gathering and managing data and as an asset, it is re-usable, non-depletable, and the value of it is not time sensitive.

Standardized Processes and Procedures This is one of the most pressing issues that the UofL Mens basketball team currently faces. There is not a standard training process for IT employees. This means that they are not being as efficient with their time and resources as they could be. As previously mentioned, having a standard process and an SOP for employees to refer to can save the organization the pain of having to waste time teaching their employees the same things over and over again, as well as lead the organization to an overall more productive path.

Communication

Communication in an information system includes everything from the people in the organization to the devices being used in the organization. There is currently a problem with the communication flow across levels of the organization, which is affecting the teams ability to work at the most efficient level. Any new system set in place will need to consider how to make communication easier, faster, and more reliable at all levels.
