Background:
In compiling median pay of individuals working in various industries, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found in 2019 that a service worker earned a median pay of $24,990 for those in animal care to $58,310 for individuals managing funerals. A college degree is not required for this category of occupations. A bachelor's degree is, in most cases, required for an individual to gain employment as a reporter, who earned, on average, $46,270 in 2019. An individual employed as an aerospace engineering technician requiring an associate's degree earned a median pay of $66,020 in 2019. The median pay of a chemical engineer with a bachelor's degree was $108,020 in 2019. The median wage for all workers was $53,490 in 2019, according to BLS data.
Many factors explain wage differentials. In this discussion, we explore a variety of occupations and factors determining median wages in these occupations. One of these factors is addressed in the Application-Based Activity for this module, titled "Marginal Product of Labor."
