In this assignment, you are asked to reflect on the comments made by motivational speaker Simon Sinek in an interview conducted by podcaster Steven Bartlett. In this interview, titled"Simon Sinek: Are Gen Z the Weakest Generation?" (copy and paste the URL to access the video -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR7-pjo-1Nc), Sinek addresses some concerns about our youngest cohort in the workforce- Generation Z.
Members of Generation Z are those born in 1995 and after, with the oldest now being age 28. While some have characterized members of Gen Z as being technologically savvy, more inclusive-minded, more accepting of diversity, and interested in social change, others have criticized the cohort for being lazy, unambitious, too reliant on others for support, and unable to cope with adversity.
After viewing the video, comment on the following:
- What positive remarks did Sinek make about members of Gen Z that would make them desirable employees? What appears to be his biggest criticism of the group?
- Based on your own experience, either as a member of Generation Z, or as a person who interacts regularly with this generation, are Sinek's comments valid? Explain.
- The term "quiet quitting" emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic to describe people who were going to work, but were just putting in minimal effort. As Sinek asked, is that bad thing? What do you think? Do you see any problems for an organization or employees when people "just" showing up for work? Please elaborate.
