In this assignment, you will identify an aspect of psychology that is sometimes misrepresented in media, such as cartoons, movies, songs, TV shows, etc. Imagine that you are having a discussion with a family member or coworker. The person makes a statement about an aspect of psychology that is blatantly inaccurate. This strikes a chord in you because you have just taken this class and learned about the real nature of that concept in psychology. As you listen, you learn that the family member or coworker is open to learning about what you know. Your challenge is to clearly explain the true nature of that aspect of psychology and persuade the person about the correct understanding of it. You will discuss the stereotype(s) such inaccurate portrayals communicate and discuss ways to help others overcome them. You will present your ideas in a recorded PowerPoint presentation as if sharing your ideas with the family member or worker. You will share your presentation with the class. 1. Prepare and record a narrated PowerPoint presentation of at least 6 slides and 7 - 10 minutes that addresses the following: One aspect of the field of psychology (theories, theorists, research, treatment) or mental health professionals/psychologists that is frequently portrayed incorrectly in the media. For example, therapy sessions are often portrayed in media with the therapist sitting in a chair and the patient lying down on a couch or a day bed as the therapist asks questions and the patient divulges their life story. Have you seen portrayals of this stereotype before? What have you learned in this class that counters this stereotype? (This example may not be used in any presentation.) Explain where you have seen or heard the misrepresentation you have identified. Justify your position that the aspect is misrepresented by giving an example and showing how that aspect is portrayed inaccurately. Support your work with readings and instruction from this course. More than one example of the misrepresentation would strengthen your presentation. Explain why you think this stereotype exists. Describe what you can do to help others abandon their stereotype and adopt an accurate understanding of this aspect of psychology. Explain what you have learned in this course that you could use to help reform someone's stereotype of the aspect you have chosen. Note: Here are some expectations and guidelines for the technical aspects of your presentation. A portion of the points possible is based on these elements: Avoid using a lot of text. The best presentations often don't have any text at all. Ensure that spelling and grammar are correct. Employ high quality images that you have the right to use (avoid copyright infringement). Cite your work. Avoid unprofessional clipart and stickman images. Use white space well. That is, avoid crowding elements or leaving large empty spaces. Align elements on the slide to create a presentation of balance and that avoids distracting misalignment of text, images, shapes, etc. Avoid many animations and transitions. These often detract from the message and indicate amateurism in presentations. Use a professional color scheme, such as one in the template choice offered within PowerPoint. White or a light color is usually best for the background. Use one or two fonts. Maintain consistent font type, sizes, colors, etc. Prepare what you are going to say so that you can explain well. You should not sound like you are reading from a script. If you read from a script, it will sound like it.
