In this Discussion, each student is required to think about two sets of data (i.e., x & y numbers) that might have a relation or correlation between them. The x-variable should be the independent" variable, and the y-variable should be the dependent variable (i.e., the y-values depend on the x-value. An example might be the following: # of vocabulary 40 words 30 known (103) 20 10 10 0 0 5 10 15 20 Age of student (yrs) In this case, it would be more appropriate to think of "age" as the independent variable, and the "Vocabulary" as the dependent variable. That is, given the age of the student, we can estimate the number of vocabulary words the student knows. It can be awkward to consider the reverse case: given how many vocabulary words a person knows, you can estimate the age of the person. The student should obtain the relevant data and put them in an Excel file to explore further. The data should contain a minimum of 15 points (i.e., 15 x-values and 15 associated y-values). Use and clearly document a reference from which the data came. Explain why you believe the data would show a relationship between them, and what type of mathematical relationship might exist (e.g., exponential, linear, logarithmic, polynomial, power). Follow the instructions provided to develop a scatterplot, a best-fit equation, and coefficient of determination, R. Identify the type of equation selected, and discuss briefly how well your "best-fit" line from the equation fits the data. Discuss how close your R value is to 1.0. Then, each student should comment on a post done by a classmate. Briefly describe what you learned from your classmate's post. Each reply should be a minimum of 50 words. Finally, the student who presented the original post should respond to one of the classmates commenting on the student's post. The post should thank the classmate for taking the time to respond, note anything learned from the classmate's response, and encourage the classmate in future work. This response should be a minimum of 50 words. Starting with 2 columns of side-by-side data (x in the 1st column and y in the 2nd column): 1. Highlight (i.e., mark) the data 2. Insert (on top tool bar) 3. Under charts select scatter (points on a graph) 4. Click the plot with points only - no lines Once the graph is produced, enter a graph title, and descriptive labels for the x- and y-axes. Use the minimum and maximum values of your x- and y-values to help format the x- and y-axes numbers to fill the graph with the data. 6. Right click on any of the data points on the graph 7. Add trendline 8. Select trendline option 9. Click: Display Equation on chart 10. Click: Display R-squared value on chart An example graph is provided below based on the numbers shown to the right: x 1.00 5.250 3.00 5.650 3.11 5.483 3.50 6.550 4.00 5.633 4.97 5.817 5.00 5.683 5.40 5.933 5.90 6.033 6.21 5.617 7.00 6.233 7.46 6.050 7.50 6.133 9.32 5.983 10.00 5.850 12.43 6.367 13.11 5.867 15.00 6.833 26.22 6.367
