In this section, we will answer questions using the open-source astronomy program Stel- larium 2. During 2017 there was a very rare total solar eclipse along a very narrow path about only 75 miles wide; it was visible on August 21, 2017 from just south of Portland, Oregon to Key Bay, South Carolina. The maximum length of totality occurred along this path near Hopkinsville, KY at GPS coordinates 36.9 N, 87.6 W. In this exper- iment the location coordinates for that date will be set at these coordinates. For most of the experiment, coordinates appropriate to New York City will be used. From NYC on August 21, 2017 only a partial solar eclipse was observed and one would have not noticed that anything unusual occurred. Questions and Procedure Set the observing site to New York City. The time should be set to obtain answers appropriate for a particular day of interest. The clock can be stepped to observe a maximum or minimum for the particular question. A time step of about 10 minutes is probably convenient. It is useful to turn on as markers the Ecliptic, Meridian Line, and the local coordinate system in azimuth and altitude. The Meridian Line is a line from North to South that passes through the Zenith (the straight up point in the sky). In 2016 the first day of Spring was on March 20, 2016 at 12:30 AM EDT and there was a Full Moon on March 23rd. The next New Moon was on April 7, 2015. 1. What was the maximum altitude that the Full Moon reached in the sky on Mar. 23rd ? 2. What was the altitude of the Ecliptic path in the sky at that time?
