In this video, we're going to introduce some of the important definitions that we're going to be using throughout the statistics course. First, what is the goal of statistics? In the following weeks, we're going to learn how to work with data to produce useful summaries and graphs. We use these graphs to help us visualize and understand what the data is telling us about the population we are studying. Sometimes the population we are studying is too large to gather data from every member of population. Actually, usually, the population is too large. And that's where statistics comes in. We gather data from a subset of the population called a sample. And we use that data then to infer information about the entire population. We start with what is it that we're trying to learn. We have some sort of question that we want to answer. Some things to consider when first designing your study is, why is answering those questions going to be interesting or useful? How do you intend to use these results? What population are you interested in learning about? So who's the whom? And what do we want to learn about this population? What questions
