In today's workforce, having staff that understand and exhibit cultural competence is a necessity. We are aware that in the workforce, everyone is different in many ways especially culturally. Therefore, management instill trainings, and seminars regarding respecting the diversity that is present in the workforce. Especially in the healthcare field, not only are we working with a multitude of different cultures, but we are also meeting with patients who come from different culture as well, and may have different beliefs. To ensure that staff can respect and understand in some organizations, discussing cultural competencies is a requirement and part of the onboarding process. Management request that staff becomes more self-aware, show a willingness to want to continue developing a diverse workplace. When the workforce acknowledges this shift in diversity, more people are feeling accepted and understood. This creates a welcoming and comfortable work environment but also ensures a safe environment to patients as well. In healthcare, patients are more likely to be transparent with someone from their own cultural background or a similar background, so having a healthcare worker with a similar understanding and belief system as you, the patient, also provides you with comfort and reassurance.
