In your response to at least two peers, discuss actions and consequences that should be taken in response to a violation of their selected principle. Use the following questions to help guide your responses:

  • What actions or strategies could you or others take to remediate the ethical issues?
  • What are some repercussions of not abiding by your peer's selected principle from a legal, business, or general professional perspective?

Greetings Professor and classmates,

I selected "Objectivity and independence". Objectivity and independence mean that a member of AICPA would be sure that they work without bias, so they are impartial, honest, and have no conflicts of interest. A member above all is not influenced by relationship status with the client. Regardless of the nature of any prior relationship with the client, the member would work to ensure the integrity of their work and avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

This principle is valuable for practitioners because it assures that there professional reputation remains intact, and they avoid any undue consequences of impropriety. The principle is valuable for businesses, because whether the member is independent (such as a public accountant) or works as an employee of the company, the business is assured that the member will perform their duties honestly and will not be unduly influenced to the detriment of the company. This principle is valuable to clients because they will know that they are being provided with accurate information and that the member is working in their best interests to provide untainted results. Over the course of time in working with a client, a member of may find him/herself faced with an opportunity to or challenge to fudge certain numbers to provide a favorable result for the client (i.e., reporting taxes). In order to maintain the relationship with the client, the member may be tempted to not take an ethical course of action or may be unduly influenced by their opinion of the client to overlook certain inconsistencies.
