Is sleepiness a unitary construct? That is, you are either asleep or awake and there is nothing in between, and in the process of falling asleep sleepiness increases in a linear fashion? Or can sleepiness be differentiated into changes in attention, motivation, cognitive ability and tendency to fall asleep? Can there be a single measure of sleepiness, or do we need multiple measures to accurately define the concept?
