Individual Assignment #1 - Peter Arnell at Clayton Industries
For this paper, you are to be a close and confidential mentor/coach to Peter Arnell, the Country Manager for Italy. You are to provide advice/direction on an appropriate course of action.
The Question:What should Peter Arnell do?
Your task is to formulate a short but formal/executive email (memo) to Peter Arnell which 1) identifies your choice of strategic options, 2) a brief but compelling rationale for your choice the available strategic options, 3) the impacts (positive and negative) upon and expected responses from all key stakeholders in the case, and 4) your recommendations for specific actions for overcoming objections of non-aligned stakeholders.
To get this task- you will need to develop a sense for the overall external environment, size up the specific strategic/business situation at Clayton Industries, evaluate and choose a course of action among the three options presented at the end of the case that you believe to be the most strategically logical and organizationally viable given any evidence related to the values, culture, and politics of the organization.
Note:
- As Peter's mentor/coach, you should assume that the two of you have a long-standing and trusting relationship. Thus, you should address Peter in the first person and speak to him in a clear and directive manner.
- You should also assume you have an intimate understanding of the business and organizational issues at Clayton and have Peter's and the organization's best interest as your only priority.
- Your task is to make the call and direct Peter on what he should do, i.e., recommend specific actions.
- Arnell needs to take action, and you are to make the call and tell him what to do.He may need to do something himself or delegate by tasking others to do them, where tasking/delegation is a specific action.
- Keep in mind that "thinking" is not "doing".i.e., Suggesting Arnell "think about doing something" is not a suggestion that he "do" anything, i.e. perform a task or take action.Likewise, "considering doing something".Nor should you recommend he "might" do something.
Details:
1) The opening statement should be a short summary of the situation and must specifically state your choice of strategic actions.
2) In the body of the memo should cover the following topics:
- a brief but comprehensive rationale for your choice of the available strategic options,
- the impacts (positive and negative) upon and expected responses from all key stakeholders
- recommended immediate actions for overcoming potential objections of non-aligned stakeholders.
3) Closing/summary statement
