Individual or Family Therapy? The parents and adolescents in the Martin family have been having problems. There has been a series of incidents in which everyone involved has been shouting at each other, calling each other names, or not talking to each other for days. Christine Martin feels that she has failed as a mother. She asked Molly Aberdeen, a private practice social worker, to help her cope with her feelings. After talking with Christine, Molly felt that the problem went beyond Christine's feelings and that family therapy was indicated. Even though Molly is a competent social worker, she has had no training or experience in providing family therapy. However, there no family therapists in this rural county. At first, Molly assessed the problem in such a way that individual intervention was appropriate. At least, this assessment makes it possible for her to help Christine. Hopefully, this will lead to changes in the family situation. Or, failing that, Christine will be able to cope more successfully. Is it ethical for Molly to prepare on her own to do family therapy and treat the family? Or to only offer individual therapy to Christine? What should she do?
