Purpose of the report

The purpose of the report is to study the problems of e$-$ waste E$-$waste stands for electronic waste which is defined as electronic devices that are discarded such as computers, TVs$,$ smartphones, and other electronic equipment $($What is e$-$waste and what can we do about it$?,2020).$ From a survey and secondary research, this report presents the solutions to reduce the e$-$waste problems and challenges.

Importance of e$-$waste issues to the human race and the entire world.

E$-$waste elements contain toxic substances such as mercury, beryllium, lead, and cadmium. These substances if released by any means cause harmful effects on the health of living beings and the environment. In addition, the improper disposal and recycling of smartphones and similar devices has created an imposing threat to human health and the environment. Smartphones and computers contain sensitive data subject to leaks. Many of these devices contain highly classified and sensitive information makes hacking into them simpler. $($Ewaste& its negative effects on the environment$|$ Elytus, n$.$d$.).$

Brief description of the methodology $($survey and external research$).$

For this report. A survey conducted which has $20$ responses by students from universities in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, some websites and research were performed as well.

Problem Statement

Detailed description of the challenges faced by world in e$-$waste According to recent studies in $2019$ there was approximately $53\mathrm{.}6$ million tons of e$-$waste were produced globally, but only $17\mathrm{.}4\%$ was documented as formally collected and recycled $($World Health Organization,$2023).$

Impact of these challenges on Human and environmental E$-$waste is a big problem because of the improper handling and disposal of e$-$waste can harm the environment, pose health risks. The environmental impact of e$-$waste is substantial. For instance, according to the Geneva Environment Network, which analyzed the environmental impact of e$-$waste, elements and materials used in the manufacturing of electronic devices are incredibly harmful to our planet, contributing to soil, water, and air pollution $($Khattak$,2023).$ Also, it affects human health, electronic devices contain several hazardous elements. Exposure to these toxic materials harms humans and can adversely affect the nervous system, heart, brain, kidneys, and liver.

Figure $1$: awareness of e$-$waste impact on life Figure $1$ shows that $75\%$ of participants claimed that they know the impact of e$-$waste on their lives. $25\%$ of participants do not know the impact of e$-$waste on their lives. This figure shows the lack of awareness of e$-$waste in society. This is a huge problem because not knowing about e$-$waste leads to more e$-$waste and more harm for the environment. $$

Figure $2$ shows that $21\%$ of participants donate their electronic devices. $31\%$ of participants throw their devices in the trash. $10\%$ give it to recycling centers. Figure $2$ shows that there is a large amount of people who throw their devices which leads to harming the environment because electronics' material is incredibly harmful for the planet and risks human health.

Insight from the responses

According to the survey responses it shows that most people do not know about e$-$waste and its effects on their lives. Also, the survey shows that most people throw their electronic devices in the trash which is an enormous problem because electronics' material is hazardous. So$,$ the largest cause of e$-$waste is the lack of awareness about e$-$waste.
