Infant mortality has been a significant public health issue in Genesee County. Large racial disparities have been observed particularly between African American infants and infants of other races. It has been shown that African American infants are at a higher risk for infant mortality, i.e. being African American is the risk factor (exposure) and infant mortality is the disease. To quantify the disparity, public health officials followed all infants born in 2007, collected risk factor data including race data, and documented incidence of death. The next step is to calculate the risk ratio of infant deaths between African American infants and infants of other races. In 2007, 6264 infants were born in Genesee County. Among the 1627 African American infants born, 37 died within their first year of life.
