Inquiry Question Can you design an experiment that will determine to horsepower of a simple, powered toy? Can you test the claims made by automobile manufacturers regarding vehicle power ratings? The internet is full of videos showing sports cars performing. With simple high school physics you can use these videos to dispute the manufacturer horsepower claims. The data is provided, but are you able to analyze it? Battery powered toys also have power ratings. With a solid understanding of work and energy you should be able to design a method to help determine the power output of a simple toy. Finally, as the world energy demands continue to increase, efficiency becomes more and more important. Can you determine the efficiency of a simple device or toy? Are you able to modify it to improve the efficiency? POWERInstructions Using a pencil, answer the following questions. The lab is marked based on clarity of responses, completeness, neatness, and accuracy. Do your best! Please ensure that any data measured (or recorded) includes the appropriate number of significant digits (only one uncertain digit). This activity is divided into three sections: Core - this first section explores only the basic "core" ideas involved in understanding. Students must demonstrate a sound understand with all of their answers in this section BEFORE attempting the next section. Mastery - Your instructor will NOT review this section if the Core section above shows any misconceptions. In this section students will make predictions and apply the concepts and ideas learned above. For complete mastery it is expected that data collection and scientific procedures will be as accurate as possible. All work shown should be clear with any units included. Answers should be rounded off to the correct number of significant figures based on the data collected. Ace - Once again, your instructor will only look at this section provided he/she is confident that the above Mastery criteria has been met. In this section students will demonstrate a deeper understanding of the concepts through error analysis, experimental design etc. Physics concepts from other units already covered will often be required here.Watch the video below showing the driver view of the Evo car. Pay particular attention to both the start and finish times as well as the start and finish velocities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ-meMc02nE&feature=youtu.beEnergy Transformations and Work Watch the video clip that shows both interior (speedometer) and exterior views of a Mistubishi GTX55 Evolution car. The beginning of the video makes some claims about the horsepower of this car. The claims are as follows: The car setup claims a horsepower of between 1700 - 2145 hp. The mass of the car is 1650kg. 1. Based on what we see in the video how can you tell that work is being done on the car? Base your answer on the definition of work, W = 4E or W =Fd. (note: it is not enough to state that there is a "force acting over a distance". You must discuss how you know that a force is present) 2. Discuss the energy transformations that occur in order to get this car up to speed. Be sure to describe any energy forms that would be considered as "losses" in terms of the final output of the car. 3. What form of energy is the car achieving as it accelerates? Ep or Ex (circle one) 4. How is power, P, defined in terms of work, W, or change in energy, 4E?5. Choose an appropriate segment of the video to determine the Power, P, in Watts, for the car. Choose the section that you think might give you the largest result when determining power. Calculate Power in Watts: where P = W/t = AE/t Record the section of the video you are analyzing: between times fi = and 1= List and define any variables used in your calculation: Show equations used and steps required to find power, P: Power = P = W 6. Look up the conversion between Watts and hp. Ihp = W 7. Determine the horsepower of the car in the video. Convert to hp: show all steps below Power = P = hp 8. Look up the horsepower of your or your families car and record below: Make of car: Horsepower: 9. How times bigger is the horsepower of the Mitsubishi in the video compared to your car above? 10. Does your horsepower calculated above agree with the values stated by the video (at the beginning)?1 1. The quoted maximum power rating of 2145hp was achieved under "ideal" conditions. Assuming that the conditions are less than "ideal" in the video, discuss two ways that one could improve upon this Power test. Be sure to state why this would be an improvement in terms of physics. 1
