Victoria is a 16-year-old, Indian American 11th grade student at your school. Victoria comes from a well-known family in your area, as her mother and father are excellent doctors in town. Victoria is the middle child out of three children. She has an older brother in college and a younger sister in middle school. Victoria is one of the top students in her class and maintains a class schedule of only advanced placement courses. She is very active in sports and clubs around the school and is always willing to help with school initiatives when asked. Victoria comes into your office due to a periodic spring check-in that you are doing with all juniors to discuss their college placement scores and plans. You are excited about her scores. She did very well on both the ACT and SAT test and has the second-highest scores in her class.
As Victoria enters your room, you casually mention her hoodie since the weather and the temperature inside of the school are warm. As you review Victoria's scores, her excitement level does not match yours. She apologizes for her scores and tells you that she has signed up for the next testing administration. Victoria also explains that she is already on punishment for her scores and has lost her driving privileges until she retakes the tests. Confused, you probe Victoria to explain her apology as her scores will put her well in the range of acceptance and scholarship eligibility for many top colleges and universities. Victoria shares that she knows that Christafer, a student in the running to be valedictorian next year, scored higher than her. Christafer was just 80 points from a perfect score on the SAT and only 4 points away from a perfect score on the ACT. While she thought her scores were okay, her parents were not happy with them. They have stopped her from doing anything that isn't academically related until she gets her next set of test scores back. While Victoria tries to keep a smile on her face, she mentions under her breath that she doesn't even want to be a doctor. She explains that she likes learning, but she really loves art and English. Her parents have told her all her life that she's going to be a doctor and everything she's ever done in school has been to get into an Ivy League college.
Victoria lifts her arm to quickly wipe away a tear with her sleeve, and you point out a few scars on her arm. Victoria quickly covers her arms and explains that the scars are nothing. She says that sometimes she cuts herself when she gets stressed but it's no big deal. She explains that she always feels much better after she does it and that she knows a lot of other kids at the school who do it too. Victoria shares that she doesn't do it as much as she used to, but lately, she's been stressed so she cuts herself to help her feel better. She pulls back both of her sleeves to reveal both fresh and healed scars, as well as a few on her thighs. Victoria says that her parents know that she used to do it and they sent her to a counselor a few years ago. Victoria explains that not many people say anything about them because they assume that they are sports injuries. Only a few other people in the school know that she cuts herself and that's only because she found out that they do it too.
