This is the final assignment for this section of the course.

For this assignment you will develop a "Resiliency Toolkit" based on course content. This will include defining resiliency, identifying personal risk factors, and building a detailed plan of the techniques you plan to use to support your resiliency plan. You are expected to cite a minimum of 3 academic sources (Only sources assigned or discussed during this part of the class can be used for this assignment). The goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your learning from Part 1.

Assignment Details

Sections

Your Resiliency Toolkit should consist of the following sections and should demonstrate knowledge of course material. You are welcome to add additional sections as you deem fit. (Please note - You can use "I" throughout this assignment):

Introduction:

  • Personal context:
    • Who are you?
    • Why did you decide to go into your chosen profession?
    • Why does context matter?
  • Why is the concept of resiliency important to you as an individual and in your current or future career?

Body:

  • What is resiliency?
    • What does resiliency mean to you?
      • Be sure to mention both upstream and downstream notions of resiliency.
      • Be sure to incorporate notions of resiliency from a healing justice/holistic perspective.
    • What are the key elements of resiliency?
      • Discuss the bio-psycho-social approach to resiliency.
      • Be sure to discuss key terms (e.g. compassion fatigue, stressors/stress, PTSD, etc.).
  • Risk Factors:
    • Discuss key personal and work-specific risk factors that may compromise your resilience.
    • What factors do you need to be aware of that can support or hinder your resilience in your chosen profession?
    • What are the signs and symptoms of burnout and other relevant conditions that may impact you as you enter the workplace?
  • Resiliency Plan - Facilitating Resilience, Responding to Illness:
    • How will you support your own resiliency as you enter practice? Develop a resilience plan that you can refer to throughout your career to support your mental health.
    • Name at least three techniques you intend to practice in the future. Be realistic.
      • Why did you choose these techniques?
        • What contextual/historical factors led you to choose these techniques?
        • How do you plan to practice these techniques?
        • What if these techniques do not work?
      • Be sure to explain these techniques and cite appropriate evidence that supports their use.
    • What will you do if you experience burnout, compassion fatigue, etc.? How will you know that you need to seek help?
    • Your plan should include individual, organizational, and societal supports and should be based on course material.
    • Your plan should also include a list and description of local resources that are available in your planned locale of employment.

Conclusion: How do you plan to implement your resiliency plan and modify it if necessary? What are the next steps you will take to maintain your positive mental health?
