Subjective memory complaints and their relationship with perceived stress and alcohol consumption in university students: mediating role of prefrontal symptomatology

Subjective memory complaints defined as a perception of problems to remember or retain information, affect the daily development of people who manifest them. Although it was a condition reported mostly by older adults is increasingly present in young people. These memory failures, as they are also known, seem to be a multifactorial phenomenon influenced directly and indirectly by factors such as perceived stress, prefrontal symptoms and alcohol consumption. Investigation is proposed, through a multiple mediational model, determine if the prefrontal symptomatology mediates the relationship between subjective memory complaints with perceived stress, alcohol consumption and in university students. For which a cross-sectional study with mediation analysis was designed, in which it was applied the Daily Life Memory Failure Questionnaire (MFE-30), the Pre-Frontal Symptomatology Inventory (ISP), the Perceived Stress Scale (EEP) and the Alcohol Consumption Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) in a sample it consisted of 548 students, of whom 348 were women and 200 men, with an average age of 21 years 3 months ( 2,102). Positive and significant correlations were evident between the variables included in the study. The mediational analysis suggests that the problems of executive control and attentional problems act as mediating variables in the relationship between perceived stress / alcohol consumption and subjective complaints of memory, this being total mediation. This study broadens the understanding of the effect of prefrontal symptomatology, specifically the problems of executive and attentional control as a mediator of subjective memory complaints in this population.

Key words: subjective memory complaints, executive functions, executive problems, perceived stress, alcohol consumption, mediation.
