Describe how MGT3000 concepts apply to your WorkPlace (If you are not currently employed, then please contact me in mid-to late November so that we can determine the most sensible option. Please come with a recommendation.) through a paper or report written to address the following items. Ensure that the paper uses section headings to guide the reader. Do not treat this as a numbered response to a series of questions. There should be a good introduction to the paper, a solid conclusion, and sections (as described) that flow with introductory sentences and transition statements to the next section.
Introduction/Executive summary includes the following (could be one to three paragraphs depending on your writing style) :
- Organizations name and mission.
- State your job title, level of position (upper, middle, lower), time/tenure in the position, the title of your supervisor(s) (if relevant), and the number and titles of employees who report to your supervisor and/or you.
- Foreshadow the rest of the paper by describing what topics will be covered.
Organizational background (one maybe two pages):
- Describe your, or the manager used for this paper, typical day-to-day job duties. If you have no supervisor, describe your typical day-to-day duties. In other words, describe how a top or middle level manager in your workplace starts and progresses through the day to accomplish the main job responsibilities.
- Also, state 2-3 effective (SMART) strategic goals of the organization that employs you. (Refer to Exhibit 5.4, p. 194). Note: both mission and goals are required but you may create them, if there is no formal source you can cite. Discuss two with respect to how they are good or weak goals based on the way we've learned a goal should be used.
Heart of the paper:
Select any three of the items below for the body of your paper. If you write to more than three topics, I will only read and grade from the first three. This is the heart of your paper, so use as many paragraphs as needed for each. Each item may take one to two pages. I will look to see that you have specific organization detail that is well-aligned to the specific way our class understands these topics. Each topic you select will, by sentence or paragraph, contain an introduction, body, conclusion and then transition to the next section. Consider headings for each section. Strongly consider citing definitions from our study that you can 'prove' from your discussion. In some situations your organization will directly do what we studied. In other situations, you'll describe what your organization does and how it could be improved. Provide highly detailed and insightful descriptions of what happens in your organization.
- Leadership: Describe how your manager (or you) leads or manages. How does that leadership style compare to that of his/her supervisors and/or other managers? (and how do you reconcile differences?) NOTE: Theory X or Y is not a leadership style; those are general orientations that could be discussed in culture and/or Organizational Behavior.
- Motivation: How do you create and maintain motivational climate [for employees] and/or Ask about the aspects of the Job Characteristics Model (related to motivational potential score). Illustrate one specific motivational theory.
- Planning and goal-setting processes: How does your manager (&/or you) plan for your department? OR How are the manager, you, and your co-workers involved in the organizations planning process? If not, what is the organizations planning process? Ensure this is described via the specific concepts we studied. In example, it would not work to say the organization uses both a "rational decision making process" and "bounded rationality" without showing a depth of knowledge in each.
- International management: How does globalization affect your organization? How have the different cultural emphases (e.g., Hofstede framework) impacted your decisions and organization? How does the organization prepare employees for international interactions? Use terms and concepts from your studies.
- Culture: Describe the overall culture of organization. Explain the (invisible) underlying values and beliefs and the (visible) cultural artifacts. How does your manager (&/or you) or organization support the culture?
- Decision making: How are decisions typically made that affect employees? What is the level of certainty, risk, or ambiguity involved resulting in which of the three decision-making models (e.g., classical, administrative, political)? Is this process working &/or how might decision-making be improved to facilitate employee acceptance of decisions?
- Change and Innovation: How is change accomplished in your organization? How does your manager (&/or you) & your organization practices encourage, manage, and reward innovation? Incorporate at least one change management theory.
- Teams: Is teamwork important in your organization? If so, how is membership determined and how is teamwork managed? Be sure you are applying teams theory rather than confusing teams with groups of individuals working together. In example, my boss at school will refer to "his team", but we are more a work group rather than team since we do not work to a single common goal or in conjunction with each other. We tend to work independently as individuals.
- Human Resources: Are your manager &/or you involved in recruiting and hiring employees? If so, how? If not, who recruits and hires for your department, and what is the typical process? OR Does your organization use RJPs? OR How is on-boarding (or orientation) accomplished? If not, why is it not necessary? ...OR other HR management topics. Define and illustrate at least three HR processes.
Conclusions. Offer a conclusion to the paper and a statement about the value (or lack of value) found by understanding theory so that it can be apply to the less structured workplace.
