Julian Fairchild, president of Acme Quonset Huts, decided last June that the firm's three person accounting staff must be increased to four, He knew that there were only six other non- production employees in the company, and belived that none of them was interested in accounting.
The local university offered a full accounting program, so Fairchild called the placement director and asked for the names of all recent accounting graduates who were in the job market. After making several phone calls, four interviews were arranged. Two weeks later Fairchild offered the job to edward Goodstore who had ten days to reply.
Two days alter making the otier, Fairchild mentioned Goodstore and the oiler to Wendell Hardy became very upset, because he knew nothing about hirinf an additional accountant. After much discussion Fairchilf agreed to list the position under normal procedures, even though he felt it was a waste of time because the job required an accounting designation and he already had a good candidate in Goodstore.
One week after Goodstore was given the job offer, he called Firchild at 10:am to accept it. At 9:00 a.m that same day Sandy Ostermiller, a production employee for three years came to Hardy's office to discuss the accounting position.
Ostermiller: I noticed that an opening for an accounting postion was advertised in yesterday paper.
Hardy: Yes, I am very proud of that because, off the record, old man Fairchild did not want to list it. He thinks this place is still like he founded it with seven employees.
Ostermiller: Well good! My best friend, Angela Singh, and I are considering applying.
Hardy: You can't- you must have an accounting designation.
Ostermiller: thats why we're so excited about it. next week we both finish night school at Humber College, where we're accounting majors.
Hardy: "thats good news. we like to give our own employees a chance to move up- here are two application
Ostermiller: well, that is what we thought, but we didn't know the policy about promoting people from inside.
Hardy: to tell the truth, there isn't a written policy or anything. In my five years here. I've just always given our own people first chance at a job if they are qualified. As soon as i can, i'll tell Fairchild. I know he will be happy that you two have worjed so hard at night school.
Ostermiller: Thank you. We both like it here. but we really don't want to work on the line for thirty more years.
Hardy: Very good! Bring back the applications as soon as possible.
