Second, multi-systemic ecomap of your "client". Include ecomap symbols and relationship lines for a minimum of eight (8) systems for your "client's" ecomap. Remember to think systemically with a person-in-environment focus. Avoid listing individual family members or friends as independent systems.
Third, a three-generational genogram Do not forget to include siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, children, grandchildren for each generationyou can get creative and add family members as well.
The course readings (textbook and journal articles) provide instructions on this and gives examples, please make sure you refer back to the textbook and readings for more assistance.
Your genogram and ecomap can be created in one of two ways:
You can draw the ecomap using paper, pen, pencil, etc., and then scan your page(s) to an image (JPG or PNG) format or PDF format. (Please keep your scanning resolution to 200dpi or less.)
You can digitally create them using the Microsoft PowerPoint software (or an equivalent, such as Google Slides, which can export to PPT or PPTX format). If you choose this option, then you are encouraged to use shapes, lines (and various line styles), symbols, color, images and text notes.
Case Vignette: Susana
Presenting Issue: Depression
Social worker role: High School Social Worker
Susana Benavides is 15-year-old female who identifies as Mexican-American. Her mother, Laura
Benavides schedules a conference with you because Susana has been skipping classes and her
grades have fallen from As and Bs to Cs and Ds. Her mother has noticed some cuts on Susana's
forearms and legs and is worried she may be "cutting" again. She says Susana is not socializing
with her usual group of friends, instead spending most of her time on her phone.
Ms. Benavides informs you that she is afraid that Susana may have inherited "some mental
illnesses" from her biological father. She went on to explain that Susana has not had contact
with her biological father since she was 4 years old due to severe domestic violence and sexual
abuse. His parental rights were terminated during the divorce. Susana's stepfather adopted
both her and her older sister when she was 5 years old. Ms. Benavides shares that Susana cut
herself when she was in middle school and after starting counseling and some medication, she
stopped injuring herself. She discloses that she read Susana's journal where she writes that
everyone hates her, and she has an online boyfriend who is 19 who lives out of state.
Ms. Benavides added that Susana will only eat "junk" and will not eat any fruits or vegetables.
At her last physical Susana's pediatrician was concerned with her diet and weight gain and
referred them to a dietician. During mealtimes when her parents urge her to eat some healthier
food, Susana becomes upset, tells them that she hates them, and will storm off to her room to
listen to music and be on her phone.
After reviewing Susana's school records, you learn that s that Susana was born in Mexico and
her family immigrated to the United States when she was 2 years old. She has a good academic
record and was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and Attention Deficit and
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) when she was 6 during first grade by the school psychologist.
The only time modifications and accommodations were made for Susana's assignments was in
sixth grade when she started middle school and had to transition to different classes each
period. She is not currently on any medications. You noticed that Susana had a lot of school
absences in middle school and was hospitalized several times for severe depression.
When you meet with Susana, she says nothing is wrong and states she is annoyed she has to
meet with you and that her mother did this to her. She says she is bored of her group of friends
and has made new ones online playing a game. When her grades are discussed, she states that
her teachers are being harder on her than other students or they do not like her. She informs
you that she would prefer to be homeschooled or complete high school online because
"everyone at this school is dumb". She goes on to tell you that if her parents do not agree to
this, she will move in with her boyfriend or find her biological father. You do notice some light
scratches on her arms that are almost healed. When you notice her in the school cafeteriaduring lunch, you see that Susana sits alone, does not eat any lunch, and is focused on her
phone.
