Instructions for writing and presentation on toxic hazardous substance exposure in a community and how US Acts and Laws of regulatory toxicology is protecting people from this substance.

Step 1. Find a toxic chemical (e.g., a pesticide in our spoil, water or air, or a chemical additive in foods; you will find many examples here:https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiledocs/index.html ) which is regulated by any one of the following acts in the US: Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). Write two-page minimum double-spaced introduction in plain language (you will find some resources here:https://www.cdc.gov/healthliteracy/developmaterials/plainlanguage.html ) about: 1) the chemical nature of this toxic substance (you will find it in SDS: https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA3514.pdf or in other online sources) and associated health hazards (you may show a pictogram) in the community from its exposures (cite at least 3 references in APA format) ; 2) Current safety standards of the chemical, and proper safe handling related information, and personal protective equipment (PPE) and other control measures applicable for the lay public (e.g., rural farmers); 3) How is the science of toxicology and government regulations (TSCA or FIFRA or FQPA or EPCRA) ensure the protection of individuals and the environment from this toxic substance? You may consider writing/presenting on a mix of known and unknown toxic substances, which will make the document more interesting.

Step 2. Describe ( page minimum, double spaced) how this toxic substance is present in the natural environment and various workplace in various forms (e.g., dusts, mists, vapors, fumes, mixtures), and how it exerts different health effects or adverse effects on the environment and ecosystem when present in different forms. Also describe different exposure routes (e.g., skin, respiratory tract, digestive tract, eyes) and pathways (water, air, soil) for humans and the ecosystem.

Step 3. Describe ( page minimum, double spaced) emergency response against this toxic substance, if there is any splash, leakage, spill, or accidental inhalation and swallowing occur in the community or in a workplace.

Step 4. Describe the specific act or law in plain language, which is protecting the public from this toxic substance (1-page minimum, double spaced). Describe how this law was developed, what are the different addendums and why those were added. Successes and failures of this act or law (again, in plain language for lay public) and conclude with your thoughts on successful implementation of this law or act in the future involving government officials and the community.
