Instructions

Part One:

For this first segment, I would like to take you back to the first module of the OGL 320: Introduction to Project Management class and have you once again consider "How Good Are Your Project Management Skills?" from Mind Tools found at http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newPPM_60.htmLinks to an external site.. You aren't required to take the quiz (although it might be fun), but use the questions or prompts as a source of reflection as you consider the content and experiences you have gained in both project management classes. Please address each of these questions:

  • Since first taking the quiz "How Good Are Your Project Management Skills?" until now, canyou identify areas of growth or knowledgeregarding project management specifically, or leadership in general? Do you find yourself giving more consideration to particular areas, principles, or practices (e.g. scheduling, scope management, communication styles, etc.)?
  • Given your previous experience, as well as your more recent interactions with the Harvard Simulation scenarios, how would youdefine your personal approachto project management? What areas do you tend to emphasize or privilege while managing projects where trade-offs are inevitable? In what areas do you find your biggest challenges?
  • Lastly, although the scenarios that you worked through in this class offered a very narrow arena in which project management techniques can be applied, I would like for you to now make the connection between the skills that you employed and learned to your own professional environmentwhether you are already working within it or aspiring to soon work within a particular industry. For example, how can project management skills be useful in government jobs, education, the non-profit sector, etc.? In other words, what are your "takeaways" that hold direct relevance to you professionally? Be specific.

Although you can easily discuss these questions in general terms, please integrate as many specific examples from this course's assigned readings, blogs, and simulation scenarios that you can to better illustrate your points.

Part Two:

Part two has a more singular focus as you create THREE areas of advice for someone else preparing to start the Harvard Project Management Simulation for the first time. You are the expert since you have spent the last several weeks navigating each scenario and discussing them with your classmates. What words of wisdom can you impart?

Potential areas to focus on include:

  • Suggestions on how to manage the three most visible levers of project management (scope, resources, and schedule).
  • Critical trends or patterns that you found in the different scenarios.
  • Your own personal "model" of the causal relationships that exist within projects.

Please use a bullet point format for this portion of the assignment.
