SCENARIO: Imagine that you have been hired as the manager of an East Bay Parks and Recreation department. A group of students from a special education program is taking their field trip at your park, and several students, as well as a member of your staff, come to you with special needs.
Make a plan for accommodating the individuals with the special needs outlined below. Be SPECIFIC. Include resources and organizations, tools, or websites that may be helpful in the situation.
FUN AND GAMES FOR FRANK: Frank is a profoundly deaf 13-year-old boy. He is trying to participate in the field games led by your staff at the park, but no one on staff speaks ASL and he can't understand the instructions or hear when a foul is called on the field. How should your staff accommodate Frank's needs?
ENRIQUE AND EVERYONE ELSE: Enrique is a member of your recreation staff. Enrique has recently been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. One of the ways Enrique manages his mental illness is to stick to a very rigid schedule for getting the sleep he needs. He comes to you complaining that the required rotating weekend shift at the park is disrupting his schedule and asks to be removed from working weekends as a disability accommodation. The other recreation staff are upset because they do not want to cover another weekend schedule and think Enrique is getting an unfair advantage. How can you meet Enrique's needs and still be sensitive to the needs of the other staff members?
DANIELLA AND THE DODGEBALL: Daniella has a spinal injury which caused paralysis from the waist down. Daniella would like to participate in the dodge ball game being played, but the staff person facilitating the game isn't sure how to include her, and is worried that Daniella will be injured if she is hit by the very firm dodge ball. Should Violet be allowed to participate in the game? If so, how can Daniella's needs be accommodated in this situation?
