Details

Sally was recently hired at a local check cashing store. As part of her job description, she is required to follow strict guidelines to ensure the safety of the Vault's cash and her own safety as employees are required to handle their shift on their own without the presence of additional staff. These guidelines include not being able to open the door that gives access to the vault, which is also where transactions are handled behind a bullet proof glass. This door must only be opened while another employee is present for example when changing shifts. This door can only be opened without the presence of an employee when the store is no longer in business hours and the employee has ended their shift. All employees are trained efficiently to handle all sales transactions including checks, bill payments and money transfers. As part of their contract with the company, they must ensure that the cash is handled with accuracy as they must make a balance report for their shift at the end of the night. This balance report includes records of sales for all services provided as well as the ending balance for their shift. Employees must count all cash and ensure that the total cash present matches the ending balance on the report. If there is a difference in actual cash, they are responsible for paying the difference. However, if they end up with an amount that is over the ending balance, they are required to report this amount to a manager as it does not belong to the store.

Dilemma

During Sally's shift, she was attending to a new customer that wanted to cash his check. Sally created a profile with the customer's photo ID and their phone number as it is required for new customers. She began to collect the money from the register for the total amount due to the customer. The customer was distracted by a call on his phone, despite this, Sally proceeded to place the money on the opening near the window. As the customer walked towards the exit door, she realized a single hundred-dollar bill that she did not count. Efficiently handling cash is an important role of the job as the majority of the transactions are well over 500 dollars and attention to detail is necessary. Failing to meet these requirements more than once can result in termination.
