The therapist used a scaling technique and had Gwen recognize her strengths and the miracle question as interventions to help Gwen. Instead of concentrating on problems and their causes, the therapist gets the client to think about hopes and achievements (Solution-focused therapy, 2005, p. 4). Beyebach et al. stated that researchers have noted that the specific questioning techniques (e.g., miracle questions, scaling, etc.) are an important means of facilitating changes with clients and that increasing positive expectancies, and positive emotion, such as hope and optimism, may be associated with positive outcomes within solution-focused therapy (as cited in Franklin et al., 2016, p. 17). Therefore, therapists help clients see themselves as their own experts.
Scaling questions aim to help clients see how far they have come, where they are going, and how close they are to the goal (Solution-focused therapy, 2005, p. 4). Scaling questions can also help the client to see what their problems are. In addition, the miracle question helps Gwen to focus on what she wants. The miracle question is a way to discover what the client hopes for and what everyday life would be like if those hopes were realized (Solution-focused therapy, 2005, p. 4). Therefore, through these two techniques, Gwen can recognize her strengths.
At the end of the session with the therapist, Gwen decided to start her day in prayer and to do stretching exercises to help her reduce stress. Additionally, Gwen decided it was best to step down from one of the committees she is on to allow more time for herself and her family. Therefore, the therapist helped Gwen see inside herself and identify what she wanted, focusing on a solution rather than problem-solving.
