Instructions: Submit one Excel workbook showing work for the following problems. Please solve each problem in separate tabs of the workbook and label them accordingly. Make sure your work is easy to follow with built-in cell formulas, proper labeling, and the objective cell easy to find. Be sure to include a brief summary statement explaining the outcomes in your own words as if you were explaining it to company leadership. If a portion of the problem requires new constraints or Excel Solver inputs, please add a new tab to your workbook. 1. A farmer in Napa Valley has a 100-acre farm on which to plant grapes or almonds. Every acre planted with grapes requires 75 gallons of water per day. Every acre planted with almonds requires 100 gallons of water per day. The farmer estimates that it will take 1.5 hours of labor to harvest each acre planted with grapes and 3 hours to harvest each acre planted with almonds. They believe that the grape yield will sell for about $3,000 an acre and that the almond yield will sell for about $4,000 an acre. The farmer can pump a maximum of 9,000 gallons of water per day for irrigation purposes from their own well. Finally, the farmer can hire laborers to harvest the fields at a rate of $10 per hour. The laborers are all capable of harvesting either grapes or almonds. The farmer has only saved $2,400 from last year for paying laborers. If the farmer sells all the grapes and almonds that they produce, how many acres of each crop should the farmer plant in order to maximize profits? a) Find the optimal solution by setting up the problem in Excel and using the "Solver" Add-in. b) California has been forecasted to have a drought during growing season as a result of climate change. The farmer estimates that this will cut the daily water supply from their well in half. Find the new optimal solution and explain your findings. c) Please revert back to the original problem from part a). The Californian state government has just instituted a minimum wage for day laborers of $20 per hour. Find the new optimal solution and explain your findings. d) Suppose that parts b) and c) were hypothetical situations that you tested in your role as an agriculture manager for Napa Valley. In light of what you learned from these scenarios, what would suggest your job priority be in order to maximize agriculture profits in the region? i. Lobby the Californian government to ensure that they do not increase the minimum wage for day laborers. ii. Appeal to local banks for decreased interest rates on loans for farmers to buy more land. iii. Form a partnership with local researchers and entrepreneurs coming up with more efficient ways to water crops.
