This section requires knowledge on the various topics we treated on Money. The task involves retrieving the monthly monetary data from the Bank of Ghanas (BOG) website for the periods 2006 to 2018 to answer the following questions. This assignment is due on the 22nd of June, 2020. You are required to answer all questions. This carries 50 Marks.

Using the data.

  1. Thoroughly show how you would explain to a colleague in your office how you can arrive at the calculation of Ghanas monthly High-Powered Money over the period. (4 Marks)
  2. Thoroughly show how you would explain to a colleague in your office on how you can arrive at the calculation of Ghanas monthly amount of money supply for each year using Ghanas official empirical definition of money. ( 4 Marks)
  3. Using the data points, plot the monthly amount of money supply and comment on the trend. (6 Marks)
  4. Calculate the year-on-year growth of the empirical official definition of money in Ghana using the fourth quarter of 2015, 2016 and 2017. Comment on the findings. (6 Marks)
  5. What might have accounted for the change in the growth rates of the official definition of money in the period under review in (iv) above.

  2. Based on your knowledge of the money multiplier, identify and explain one ratio in the dataset embedded in the calculation of the money multiplier. Explain how this ratio can change the money multiplier and the money supply. (5 Marks)
  3. In the third quarter of 2015, the Bank of Ghana increased the monetary policy rate from 24 percent to 25 percent. Explain how this decision should affect the money supply. (5 Marks)
  4. In March, 2020, the Bank of Ghana agreed with banks and mobile network operators on measures to facilitate more efficient payments and promote digital forms of payments for the next three months, subject to review, effective March 20, 2020. A major decision that was taken allowed all mobile money users to send up to GH100 for free (excluding cash out). This included sending to a recipient on the same network, or another network via the interoperability platform. In addition, all mobile phone subscribers are now permitted to use their already existing mobile phone registration details to be on-boarded for Minimum KYC Account. Explain how this decision will affect the money multiplier, holding everything constant. (11 Marks)
