- Calculate the surface area of the walls of the home.
- Calculate the volume of one bedroom, including any closet space.
- Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances for parts of oneroom.
- Investigate and find special right triangles in the home.
Createa Scale Drawing
Think about your home or a home you've been inside. Are the rooms different sizes and shapes? Make a scale drawing of the home; use actual measurements if possible. If a ruler or tape measure is not available, a standard washcloth is usually1212in.by1212in. A standardscale for an engineer is11in. =1010ft.
Usea pencil and a ruler,drawing software, an online drawing program, or other technologysuch as SmartDraw, GeoGebra, SketchUp, AutoCAD, or FreeCAD, to createa one-floor scale drawing of a home.
- Be sure to include all of the rooms, including closets.
- Label each room (kitchen, bedroom, closet 1, etc.).
- Include the actual measurements as well as the scale factor.
- Be sure to keep a copy of your drawing. You'll need it for Part 2 of the project.
