Introduction Elinor Teresa Newman had an early introduction to natural and organic food. At their Westport Connecticut home, her family cultivated a garden and raised chickens. From a young age, 'Nell's' mother taught her to cook while her father took her fishing in nearby streams. She continued to experiment and create new recipes even when she went away to college and was often the designated chef when she returned home for the holidays. You might easily assume Nell that is a typical all-American farm girl until you find out that she is the scion of one of the most famous and successful Hollywood couples in history -Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.1 The couple moved away from bright lights of Hollywood in the late 1960s in favour of an idyllic life in rural Connecticut. Subsequently, Newman ventured away from the silver screen and started his own gourmet food company, 'Newman's Own', which grew steadily -more than 20% per year in its first five years. He remained closely involved in the company until his death in 2008. In addition to inheriting her father's blonde, blue-eyed looks, Nell shared his love of good food, philanthropy and the outdoors. In the early 1990s, when the organic food industry was in its early stages, to persuade her father to launch an organic spin-off Nell cooked an entire Thanksgiving meal with organic produce -to convince him through his stomach. Surprised but satisfied, Newman agreed and Nell founded 'Newman's Own Organics' as a division of his company. In its first year, Newman's Own Organics pretzels became the No. I organic snack food in America. Soon after, Fig Newmans were the No. I organic cookie. The company grew steadily under Nell to offer more than I 00 organic products, including chocolates, cookies, pretzels and pet food. She said of their partnership: "All ofNewman's Own products are ones that Dad enjoys, so I develop recipes that he really loves and can be proud of." The legendary actor and face of'Newman's Own' proudly posed with his daughter for the photographs on the product labels for 'Newman's Own Organics: The Second Generation.' In December 2014, the licensing agreement with Newman's Own ended, and by early 2015 Nell's image was removed from the label. She was also pushed out of the company she had started and Newman's Own Organics was absorbed into the main company. Paul Newman's Life Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925 in Shaker Heights, Ohio, an affluent suburb of Cleveland.
