In this assignment, you will play the part of court reporter! You will:

Outline the opening reference points for each side (figure 8-7)

UNION

Write a script documenting the hypothetical collective bargaining negotiation between union and employer (see B.1)

Provide the agreed upon articles in full for parts one, two, and three. (see C.1)

CONSIDERATIONS

In November 2022, workers of 5 McDonalds restaurants in North York near Seneca College Newnham Campus were certified as a bargaining unit of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and, as required, notified McDonalds of its desire to start negotiating a first collective agreement!

Each franchise has (in order of ascending seniority) Cleaning Staff, Crew Members, Shift Leaders, and Guest Experience Leaders. Each franchise is open from 5:00 AM Midnight and each has a 24-hour Drive-Thru.

The two sides meet and begin negotiating a collective agreement that will be three (3) years in duration.

PART FOUR

CONCLUSION

Address how items in figures 8-8 and 8-9 in the textbook (factors affecting employer/union bargaining power) contributed to the dialogue and articles you chose.

*Begin assuming the following current starting wages:

Cleaning Staff + Crew Members $15.50/hr

Shift Leaders $16.00/hr

Guest Experience Leaders $16.50/hr

In Parts One, Two, and Three, in addition to the opening position table, include:

B.1:

A script between union and management documenting the actual negotiation:

Make this as realistic as possible. How would each side present the initial demand? What would it say as the resistance point is approached? How do each of these figure into the Reveal and Conceal (Key Considerations 8-1) strategy each side begins with?

What concessions does each side make? Why?

Bullet-point style writing is encouraged. For example:

Union: We demand at least a 50% raise every month

Employer: That is completely unreasonable. The absolute most we can provide is 49%.

C.1:

The articles you generate can be as long or short as required. However, they should comprehensively cover any and all issues addressed in the negotiation. In addition, while the wage article must be presented in a table format, it can include terms to further illustrate specific items in writing. Sample articles can be found in Figure 7-5, Key Considerations 7-3, Key Considerations 7-13, Key Considerations 7-16, Figure 7-7, and of course, publicly available collective agreements including some posted on Blackboard.
