Introduction: There are several ways to actually apply for a job. Sometimes the best way is by telephone. Other times it may be best to write a letter of application. Maybe it is best to visit the employers personally. Different situations require different application techniques. You must follow the directions in the job lead or use your best judgment.
Applying for a Job
When you apply for job by phone, make every effort to make a good impression. Speak clearly, politely, and use correct English. Identify yourself when you call. Tell the person who answers the phone that you would like to apply for a job. They may send you an application in the mail. Make sure you give them your correct address.
If you need to write a letter to request an application, get the employer's correct name and address. Write a short business letter requesting a job application. Include your name and address, or you won't get the application. Check your letter before you send it, or have someone else check it for you. You should type or word-process your letter. You may find that your local library has a computer that you can use. If you absolutely can't type it, then write it very neatly. This is a chance for you to make another good impression.
Sometimes the employer asks for a letter of application. There are times when this is used instead of a job application. In this letter you should include the type of work you are applying for, your education, experience, special skills, a request for an interview, a statement that says you can provide references, and your telephone number. You should write it as a business letter.
There may be an opportunity for you to apply for the job in person. Perhaps the employment counselor, job placement specialist, a reference, or even a friend, may tell you to go to an address and apply for the job. Even though this is not the interview, you should dress neatly for this visit. This is another chance to make a good impression.
At this time you may be asked to complete a job application or turn in a resume. Be honest on your application. Do not say anything that is not true. This is grounds for termination. In other words, you could get fired!
Summary
Different employers may require you to apply in various ways. You may have to write letter of application and request a job application. You may have to visit the employer in person. You may have to make telephone calls. You may have to write business letters. You may have to prepare a resume. All of things are part of the job application process. Be familiar with all of them.
