Please use your knowledge of these concepts - and StatCrunch - to address the questions/problems below. Please note that your grade on this assignment will depend on the accuracy of your conclusions, the "correctness" of your graphs, calculations, and the manner in which you communicate about the specific concepts being discussed.

This spreadsheet includes the results of a survey sent to students of PA College of Health Sciences in Spring 2019. In fact, these data were collected by students in MAT260 who were interested in addressing the question, "Do students who drink coffee get less sleep on average than those who do not drink coffee?" We'll see these data again in Week 9, and we hope to address this specific question, but in this quiz, we want to address a few different questions.

This data set includes the following columns/variables:

  • Current Enrollment: Full time or part time.
  • Generation based on birth year: Baby boomer, Generation X, Millennial, Gen 2020.
  • Coffee Drinker? Yes or no.
  • Hours of sleep estimated per night

Problem 1: (4 points)

Use the data linked above to calculate summary statistics for the "Hours of Sleep" column (be sure to include the mean, median, standard deviation, and sample size).

Interpret the value that you calculate for the mean; what does the value suggest about the hours of sleep of PA College students?

Problem 2: (8 points)

Use StatCrunch, and the summary statistics you calculated above, to test the claim:

"The average hours of sleep per night for a PA College student is less than 7 hours."

In order to receive full credit for this problem:

  • State the claim in symbolic form;
  • state your null and alternative hypotheses;
  • Use StatCrunch to calculate the appropriate p-value;
  • Include all StatCrunch printouts/outputs;
  • Make a conclusion about the null and alternative hypothesis (remembering to include how you arrived at that conclusion);
  • Make a final statement regarding thestated claim. Is there evidence to support this claim?
  • (You can assume the level of significance is 0.05)

Problem 3: (8 points) We now want to consider the proportion of PA College students that drink coffee. More specifically, please use StatCrunch to test and address the following claim: "75% of PA College students drink coffee."

In order to receive full credit for this problem, be sure that you meet the items listed in the previous problem. (You can assume the level of significance is 0.05)

*Hint* You will need to know the sample proportion to calculate the p-value in StatCrunch (P-Stats). Creating a pie graph (under "Graph"), or a frequency table (Stat > Tables) can be a helpful way to get the appropriate values.
