Introduction to Case Study Lesson 2: Challenges of Working with Big Data

United Savings Bank (USB) is a large bank with branches spanning the United States. They have several information systems that support their operation. Below, you will find a description of some of their systems.

  • Core (Centralized Online Real-time Exchange) Banking System provides real-time information across all branches so that a customer can complete a basic transaction anytime, at any branch, and have up-to-date information.
  • Online Banking provides the customer access to the functionality of the core system from any web browser.
  • Lending System (Auto/Personal Loans) collects, analyzes, and provides reports on a customers ability to repay a smaller, short-term loan (typically measured in months), and thus an approval rating.
  • Credit Card System provides customers access to funding for daily expenses to be repaid at a higher interest rate than most personal loans.
  • Mortgage Lending System collects, analyzes, and provides reports on a customers ability to repay a larger, long-term loan (typically measured in years) and thus an approval rating.

In Cases 1-4, you will be asked to explore, analyze, and report on various functions for UBS.

Background:

In this case, we will continue to develop the story of United Savings Bank (USB). For this activity, envision a customer who uses the different products identified in the introduction (banking, auto loans, credit cards, and mortgage). Currently, they are not enrolled in online banking, and they do not have a mortgage. However, they are applying for a mortgage and DO have an auto loan and a credit card.

You are now the mortgage officer. Imagine that you are gathering data on this customer as a loan applicant. However, you only have access to the mortgage system.

Activity: Consider the following questions.

1. What data would you want to see on a loan application?

2. What information is contained in the other systems (that you do not have access to) that would be useful in helping you to determine whether this applicant should be granted or denied the loan?

Deliverable:

1. Create a one-page write-up explaining what information you likely have.

2. Include a discussion of the data you might need, and how this data might be used to generate a competitive advantage.
