Is Boeing the New Pinto? While they are part of two different markets, both have the same top priority of maximising their profits the best they can. However, while many companies have this same goal, they work towards this usually in a legally sufficient manner. This is where both Boeing and Ford (back in the 1970's when the Ford Pinto was made) are similar. They both share the shareholder view of maximising profits for their shareholders. This is in contrast to the stakeholder view of having responsibilities to all its stakeholders, as Boeing ignored problems that would potentially affect their customers in a negative manner. This is why regulation is in place, and just as Ford did, Boeing have and continue to face multiple lawsuits as a result of their actions. But does this make Boeing the new Pinto? Boeing, similarly to Ford when they produced the Ford Pinto, value profit maximization over overall performance of their aircraft, which may be counterproductive and result in a loss of profit instead. While they haven't always been like this, it seems their strategy has recently changed with the new aircraft they have constructed. While Boeing discovered an issue with the new aircraft 737 Max 8, they decided not to spend any more time and money on fixing the problem, instead simply ignoring it. Boeing wanted to get the new aircraft to the market as soon as possible. A very similar situation occurred with the Ford Pinto, as they also preferred to avoid spending more time and money on an issue their car had in pursuit of a greater profit. The shareholder view states that the only responsibility a business has is to generate profits for its shareholders, which is what Boeing are following (as did Ford). However, the shareholder view also states that the company must act within the constraints of the law, which both Boeing and Ford seemingly did not do. Previous Boeing aircrafts had the same issues, and some crashed, which has resulted in a loss of confidence from the public. Therefore, just like Ford, their pursuit of profit maximization has in fact resulted in less profit and far more problems for the company, which could have been avoided. The company believe that working to provide the best possible experience and safety for their customers is not what should be done, instead neglecting these in the pursuit of profit maximization. This is similar to Fords tactic with Pinto, as they calculated that $137 million would need to be spent to fix the issue their vehicles had. Instead, they ignored the issue, which if fixed was estimated to prevent 180 deaths and 180 serious injuries from occurring each year. Boeing shared a similar view
