I'm Christian, I am an eighteen-year-old boy that lives in Wheaton, Maryland, My family is from Peru but I was born and raised in the U.S. I work full-time at Nordstrom in the men's clothing department in Bethesda. I charge people $25 for each haircut and I post their cuts on my Instagram page to promote myself, My friends and the people I out also repost my page and my posts in order to gain more clients, I only own a brand new Honda Civic car in my name that I am paying off monthly, I was raised by hard-working immigrant parents who worked 40+ hour weeks to provide for me and my younger I ster. I do not believe that college is for me nor that it is the only way to succeed in dido, Today's current economty is affecting me and the rest of my peers. it has become practically impossible to move out on your own without other people and without lowering your standards for the apartment you want especially in the DMV area. Covid 19 was a major event for everyone. When Covid started I was only a sophomore in high school working part-time in retail. At Its peak, all the stores closed and most people were laid off before that and couldn't even get a chance at applying for unemployment. I was one of them. My mom at the time received unemployment while my dad had to continue struggling and trading off his health and ours in order to provide for us. He was cleaning stores and sanitized them during night shifts to make extra money I was only 16 and there wasn't much I could do, my plans to work and save for a new car were cut short and put on pause. I was also affected on the social aspect that I did not get a real high school experience and missed out on a lot That being said I slacked off a bit in school because it was online and when I graduated I think I was even more convinced college wouldn't be a good option for me. Coming out of the pandemic the demand for workers was very high and some people were still scared while some didn't want to get vaccinated which was a requirement for most places. I was in the middle of my junior year at this point and was only taking classes I was required to take in order to graduate, nothing more, I started working to try and catch up on what I felt I had missed during the quarantine by working as much as I could, The pandemic set me back financially a lot but also made me miss chances to work for other employers and build my resume which therefore affected my future. I missed out on opening a credit card, a savings account and so much more. Lack of financial independence because of the pandemic set back me and all my peers' lives in every single aspect
