1. Is it possible that simply because a theory of "just war" exists that this actually encourages war as an option? In other words, does having a path to "just" war unnecessarily excuse violence?
2. Since the United States has an all-volunteer army, other issues of justice come into play. Many enlist in the military for economic reasons - to escape poverty, acquire an education, and move beyond a marginalized status. What ethical considerations must we consider with this in mind?
3. Many of those wounded in war are effectively hidden from view. Perhaps the real danger of this reality is that it sanitizes evil. War entails killing and harming others. Those with visible or invisible and often permanent disabilities are proof of war's cruelty. Simply put, humans have wreaked this havoc; one person has devastated the life of another person. If we are not able to "see" this side of war, are we able to forget how evil war actually is and what our action or inaction means to the fortunes of others? What are your thoughts?
4. Sometimes wars and conflicts emerge from humanitarian intervention in particular and human rights concerns in general. How should we determine the balance between the risks of a perceived obligation to defend human rights abuses and interfering in the affairs of a sovereign country? For example, should we invade another country to remove a leader that's violating the human rights of their country's population? What are the ethical implications of this?
5. If it is impossible to eradicate violence, does the Just War Theory still have a place in a global society? Explain.
