Is the "Freshman 15" real or is it a myth? There is a common belief that college students typically gain 15 lb (or 6.8 kg) during their freshman year. We have data from a research study (see P. 393 in the textbook for the journal article information) that examined changes in body weight of male and female students in their first year of college.

There are two research questions we will investigate. Read and follow the directions carefully.

For each question:

  • Answer each part of the question.
  • For part c, do not include the SPSS output. Extract the information from the output and answer the questions.
  • Include the SPSS output in your homework submission. You can paste the relevant tables and include them after your answers to Questions 1 and 2.

Question 1: Is there a difference in the mean September BMI between male and female students? We want to compare the September BMI for the male students to the September BMI for the female students.

  1. Identify the null and alternative hypothesis.
  2. Name the type of test you are usingand explain why this test is appropriate
  3. Use SPSS for the hypothesis test and answer the following:
    1. What is the mean and standard deviation of September BMI for male students?
    2. What is the mean and standard deviation of September BMI for female students?
    3. What is the value of the test statistic?
    4. What is the p-value?d. Using a level of significance of 0.05, what is your decision about the null hypothesis?

e. Write a conclusion that answers the question.
