It is around 8.45pm in the Champion Sports Bar which is super busy tonight.
There is a small 18th birthday party in progress (from 7pm until 9pm) and several other groups in the bar. Jim, the father of the birthday guest, approaches the bar to order drinks. Jim has been great with the party, responsible and helpful watching out for their guests.
After Jim has ordered and is waiting at the bar two other customers approach the bar, they are:
- Billie who is a young guest of the party. Billie has been in the bar since 7pm, she is now unsteady on her feet, bumping into tables on approach to the bar, and looks as though she has been crying. She is worse than when she arrived, and you are really surprised how quickly her behaviour has changed and her level of distress. (Billie is 18 you checked her ID earlier).
- Penny is Billies friend who has just arrived at the party. You have not served her yet. Penny is protective of Billie and looks worried about her condition. She encourages Billie to have a water.
You need to:
- greet the father, Jim, who arrives at the bar first and serve his drinks, he has ordered two drinks, (Jim looks concerned about Billie too)
- greet Penny and welcome her to the party assess her suitability to be in the bar serve Penny a drink - she asks for a soft drink
- greet Billie who is asking for another cocktail, assess her condition (determine level of intoxication) and refuse service - offer and serve Billie a non-alcoholic beverage
- let your manager know you need to refuse service to Billie, and she may need to go home.
Billie's crying increases when you advise you are unable to serve her. She looks emotionally distressed and unwell, and you recommend it's time to go home. You offer to call her a taxi or connect to a designated driver. Penny offers to go home with her in a taxi.
