It is Monday, November 6, 2023 and your company is scheduled to have its annual inventory count at the end of the week. The counting starts at 9pm and ends around 3am. It is critical that this year's count be as accurate as possible because the prior year's numbers were grossly wrong and this resulted in the termination of the inventory manager(who had other issues as well).
You are the current inventory manager and you are faced with the following issue:
1. You need only one more person to finish the inventory counting team.
2. With social distancing/safety still in place for this year, the inventory count will take longer and require more physical effort and patience.
3. Rama R. is your first choice. You know that he is 55 years old and has had various injuries to his knees and back, along with other health issues. He normally leaves work by 7pm and has often commented that he is in bed by 10pm. You trust Rama's accuracy and judgement and have come to rely on his experience and maturity to accomplish key inventory tasks since you took over the managerial role.
You also consider Rama to be your friend and have learned from him. Finally, Rama has many years of late-night inventory counting experience, but you can tell that he seems to have slowed down a bit during 2023. He has made the comment that he feels more tired than normal but that could be related to daily stress that everyone is going through.
4. Candidate 2 (also known as C2) is in their early 20's and is new to your company. They have tons of energy and very driven. Unlike Rama who has conducted over 10 late night inventory counts, this would be C2's first inventory assignment. You like C2 as they are a good employee and eager to learn. But C2 has made a few mistakes that is normal for someone who is relatively new to the job. They are learning and making the effort. C2 has never told you about any health issues but you are worried about accuracy given the serious nature of this year's inventory count. You do not have a personal relationship to C2, but you know they work hard and want to succeed. You do have concerns C2's use of their cellphone on the job as this has been a problem in the past.
5. Finally, a successful inventory count would lead to cash bonuses (only if results are improved from last year) to you and your inventory count team. You would earn a very large cash award if the inventory goes well. Any person not on the counting team will not earn a cash bonus. Rama has told you that the bonus would help cover a part of his medical bills. C2 has told you that they could use the money to help with tuition at Metro State.
In at least two detailed paragraphs, which employee do you bring on to the team? You can ONLY bring one (Rama or C2) due to payroll limitations! Explain the reason for your decision.
