It is not always easy to determine how an English word is pronounced based on its spelling. To illustrate the gap between spelling and pronunciation, George Bernard Shaw created the word "ghoti." First, determine how you would pronounce the word "ghoti" based on its spelling. Then, watch the video that shares Shaw's pronunciation. How did your prediction compare to Shaw's pronunciation of the word he created? How do you think he came up with that spelling combination to represent the pronunciation? (Hint: Think about all the ways that those letters or combinations of letters are pronounced in other words.)
