It is possible to add two streams of serial data using a one-bit full adder and a flip flop to delay the carry from one stage to the next as shown in figure below. Notice that the serial data streams must be ordered with the least significant bit first. Processing serial data in this way is only used in special applications where serial data is present but there is no need to convert it to parallel form.
