It time it takes for a product to be purchased by the mass market varies greatly. Some products hit the mass market and are adopted right away, others take many years. A number of factors dramatically impact this process including the type of product, its price, the level of competition, and who the product is being targeted to. On the last Powerpoint slide of Chapter 5's material, Neuralink is discussed. You can find a plethora of information about it online, but at it's current state it is a surgicaly implantable chip which connects directly to your brain, which would allow consumers to do most things they currently do with their smartphone in their mind with nothing but their thoughts. This includes making calls, sending texts, listening to music, "Googling things" and many other functions and thus people could switch from their smartphone to this new technology without missing much of anything. Assuming that the price of Neuralink ends up being about what it costs for a high end smartphone (which may or may not happen) what do you think could possibly prevent it from being adopted by the mass market upon release? What (if anything) would you need to see in an advertisement for this product for you to consider purchasing it? Finally, do you believe that this, or something similar to it, will ever become a mass market product which completely replaces smartphones? Why or why not?
