It was discussed in class that not everyone who wants to become a police officer will accomplish this goal immediately and there are many other areas of law enforcement, security and public safety that offer exciting careers. The decision to hire someone for policing is at the discretion of the recruiting department and it is also a vocation as much as a career in terms of commitment and lifestyle. A career in policing is very diverse, challenging and rewarding. As was mentioned young professionals need to ensure that they have a backup plan as an alternative to the police career option. As with a career in policing, the security industry offers diverse, challenging and rewarding options as well. Additionally, the security industry prepares students with relevant experience for careers in policing as well as a rewarding and exciting career in the private and public sectors. With this concept in mind you will be required to research what area of the security profession as a backup plan for your career.
