ITEC640 9041 Final Examination April 2016 Points will be deducted for exam responses received after the due date. Please remember - this is a graduate level course. These questions are intended to provoke in-depth thinking about project management. To receive full credit, you need to do more than just quote the text books and/or other sources. Remember that the standard for a good, complete answer at UMUC is suggested to be a grade of 85. That means to earn above that means extra quality (not length as part of the learning is being direct and succinct to the point). As a graduate student, you should be able to expand on the definitions provided in the text and supplement with examples, commentary, etc. - in other words to demonstrate integrative and critical thinking. (Hint: you may want to look at other articles concerning each question in order to gain more information and insight for your answers - be sure to use proper citations). Requests for clarifications may be posted to the Final Exam Questions topic under the Questions and Answers conference. Questions and Answers will be public so that no class member has an unfair advantage. ESSAY QUESTIONS 1. (20 points) There are many types of formal management plans (scope, schedule, communication, etc.,) that should be created in order to complete a project on time and within budget. Consider the group project that you worked on for this class and choose one type of management plan that you wish had been formally in place for your project. Discuss how a formal management plan (for whichever category you choose) could have improved the project experience for stakeholders and how not having such a plan in place may have made some aspects of the project more challenging. Conclude your essay with a final paragraph that extends the concept from your specific project to a general project. (NOTE: To answer properly probably requires at least page single spaced or one page double spaced). 2. (20 points) You are working on your research and development project when your customer asks you to include a particular component in the project. You know that this represents new work, and you do not have excess funds available. Discuss how you would handle this situation. (NOTE: To answer properly probably requires at least page single spaced or one page double spaced). 3. (20 points) You are the IT Project Manager for an implementation of seven new servers. The scope of the project is to install and configure a new network operating system for your organization. Three of the servers are to be located in your company headquarters in New York. Two are to be installed in the Denver office, and two in the Miami office. The servers have been successfully installed in New York and Denver, but Rocky, the network administrator in Miami has yet to install the servers. He reports that he is leery of moving from his current, stable environment to the new operating system the servers provide. You have insisted that he install the servers as planned to complete the project. A week has passed and Rocky has still not completed the installation. What steps would you take to ensure the installation is completed? (NOTE: To answer properly probably requires at least page single spaced or one page double spaced). 4. (40 points) Company X just fired their project manager during the very early development phase of project Y. You have been hired as the new project manager. Write a one page single- spaced essay discussing your plans/concerns for taking control. Include a discussion of the documents you would need to review and personnel you would need to meet with in order to successfully transition the project to your control. (NOTE: To answer properly probably requires at least 1 page single spaced or two pages double spaced). Complete the following: This response to the examination is my own work. If I used data, ideas, words, diagrams, pictures, or other information from any source, I have cited the sources fully and completely in footnotes and bibliography entries. This includes sources which I have quoted or paraphrased. In adding my name following the word 'Signature', I intend that this certification will have the same authority and authenticity as a document executed with my hand-written signature.
