It's a bright sunny day16 May 2020. SGT Wassner and PFC Hankins are members of D Battery,
3-69 ADA in Fort Bliss, TX. Their unit is mostly involved in a 14-day FTX at McGregor Range, NM.
SGT Wassner and PFC Hankins are participants of that FTX, however, they have not use their vehicle
since Day-1 of the FTX (11 May 2020). Up until today, SPC Jansen primarily used the vehicle.
Anyway, SGT Wassner just received a mission from 1SG Harnett. 1SG Harnett wants SGT Wassner
to go to the rear and pick up 1LT Sanders and bring him to the FTX. SGT Wassner states that he
understands 1SG Harnett's instructions and that he and PFC Hankins will comply ASAP.
SGT Wassner instructs PFC Hankins to prepare their HMMWV vehicleD-27for the road trip to
the D Battery Orderly Room in Fort Bliss and back. "After you PMCS the vehicle, make sure you top-it
off, okay? SPC Jansen has been using our vehicle almost since we got here. Therefore, the vehicle
should be pretty much squared away provided that he performed proper PMCS. But again, top-off the
vehicle and pay close attention to the tire pressures, Hankins. I don't want D-27 going flat on us or
running out of fuel."
PFC Hankins rushes off to D-27 IAW SGT Wassner's directions. He finds D-27's log book behind
the driver's seat. He opens the log book where he finds the DA Form 5988-E that SPC Jansen had written
earlier today. Hankins frowns as he looks at the DA Form 5988-E. He notes 12 entries, some of which
he knows are significant. PFC Hankins opens up the operator's manual for the HMMWV to check what
Jansen had annotated. Hankins' eyes grow wide as he notes that some of the faults noted are dead-lining
deficiencies. "How in the heck is this possible? What was Jansen thinking?
"I had best get SGT Wassner ASAP. He's not going to like this . . ."
