It's possible that this bubblegraph looks familiar. That's the beauty of a robust real$-$world scenario and graph: they can be used to help us understand and practice various lessons related to communicating with data.

Imagine that you are Chief of Staff for the Chief Marketing Officer $($CMO$)$ at a large company. Your boss, the CMO, has asked you to work with your Human Resources Business Partner $($HRBP$)$ to understand what is driving attrition$$people leaving the company$$across the marketing organization and present your findings. Your HRBP digs into the data and emails you the visual below.

Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the graph and data it shows, then complete the following steps.

STEP $1$: What is being shown here? Write a few sentences explaining the data. Better yet: imagine you need to explain this graph to the CMO. Talk through how you would do so out loud, making assumptions as necessary for the purpose of this exercise. Is this data easy or complicated to talk through in its current form?

STEP $2$: What observations can you make from this data? Put three specific takeaways into words. Frame them as complete sentences. Write them down.

STEP $3$: How might you visualize the data in order to make the explanation you outlined in Step $1$ more straightforward and one or more of the takeaways you outlined in Step $2$ quickly clear? Download the data, then draw or create the graph in the tool of your choice.

STEP $4$: Think beyond simply showing data to how you might weave this information into a data$-$driven story for your manager, the CMO. Check out the related session on the structure$($s$)$ of story. Choose a story construct $($for example, plot$-$twists$-$ending or the narrative arc$)$ and plan your story. What is the tension? Make an assumption about whether you'll walk through the information live or send it to the CMO to be consumed on its own. Create your recommended communication in light of this assumption in the tool of your choice.
