One could say that encryption and governments have a love/hate relationship... Iove when it's for their data being secured, but hate when its their citizenry who choose to secure their own data. One such example is Australia... in 2018 a bill was proposed that would make it illegal to not uhlock your phone upan demand by police and it could cost you 10 years in jail. Fortunately, that law didn't pass, but just a year later Australian police were at it again. Encryption defenders believe that having the ability to encrypt data helps curtail the rise of totalitarian police states and affords citizens the fundamental right to privacy. Detractors argue that it is against the best interests of society to allow criminals and potential wrongdoers to have access to technology that makes it easier to commit crimes.
