Jack hired Stan to re-do his kitchen. After Stan completed the work, Jack didn't pay him anything. Stan filed a breach of contract action against Jack and received a judgment. Shortly thereafter, Jack filed for bankruptcy and the bankruptcy court discharged Jack's obligation to Stan. A year later, Jack's uncle, Patrick, promised Jack that he would pay the judgment amount to Stan. Patrick's decision was to improve Jack's reputation, which was important to Patrick since Jack now works in Patrick's construction company.
